Religious Trauma
Leaving a religion is often an incredibly complex and isolating experience.
The dominant culture and even a lot of mental health institutions believe a connection to religion or religious community to be a solely positive experience for individuals. However, many people who have experience in organized religion - whether extreme versions of fundamentalism or cults, or more insidious messages from the dominant Christian power structures that shape culture - would not be able to say that. Folks who are queer and have had experience with homophobic religious doctrine have additional challenges to navigate.
Wherever you are in your process of leaving a religious community and/or belief system, we know that there are often many obstacles that are challenging to get through.
We are here to process trauma, identity, to work with you on strategies for coping, help with identifying ways religious trauma has impacted you in your life as well as strengths and skills you may have gained, and ways to help heal and find meaning post religious trauma/abuse.
